Abstract
A joint research programme was organised at Epomanduodurum (Mandeure and Mathay, Doubs department) between 2001 et 2011, aiming inter alia to define the pattern of emergence, development and decline of the main town of ancient Sequania, after Vesontio/Besançon, the tribal capital. In-depth investigations combining a review of old documents, geophysical prospecting, interpretation of phtographic evidence, architectural studies, geoarcheological samples and open area excavations, have been carried out the south of the urban core knows as the theatre district, which concealed remains of a major worship complex comparabale in many respects to those in Augst and Avenches. The spatial organisation of this complex, its various components, range of architectural styles, chronological evolution and successive transformations have gradually been refined and it is now possible to trace the broad outlines of the iterations of a major urban sanctuary from its oribins in the Late Iron Age to its final metamorohoses in the Early Middle Ages.
