Abstract
A handfull of middens several meters high, seemingly made of organic material, were observed in a few late antique villages from the North Syrian steppe. These impressive heaps are thought to be dunghills. It makes sense in the economic context of the late antique steppe, where agricultural production appears to be highly specialized. These brown mounds are consequently the starting point of thoughts regarding what may have been the uses (fuel, manure or both?) and the value of dung in this area during Late antiquity as well as the taphonomy of these accumulations. They may also give us a closer insight into the economic importance of animal husbandry in this region of the Near East by the Byzantine period and a more accurate look on breeding pratices.
