This article proposes to reflect upon the potential “lie” of photography by analyzing Jonas Bendiksen’s The Book of Veles (2021), whose content has been generated on the computer. Bendiksen’s approach reveals the difficulty of distinguishing the true from the fake within the current regime of images and texts generated by algorithms. He reiterates the question posed by Quentin Bajac more than ten years ago, “who will tell the real from now on?”. He suggests that it might be the machines.
