Abstract
Interaction with the immune system is one of the most recently demonstrated non-classic effects of vitamin D (VitD). The potential health significance of these immunomodulatory effects has been particularly underlined by increasing awareness of impaired VitD status in populations across the globe. This article presents the impact of VitD deficiency on the epidemiology of infections due to common pathogens and the effectiveness of VitD supplementation in treating and preventing infectious diseases in humans.
