Abstract

While asylum has been in the media spotlight for more than a decade, the data presented here highlights record displacement figures at the international level, with 103 million people having been forced to flee their homes (United Nations Refugee Agency, 2022a). Questions related to social and professional integration are major issues for these people, as well as for the countries that host them. In Switzerland, 121’799 people were in the asylum process at the end of 2022 (State Secretariat for Migration, 2022). The goal of the thesis is to provide an understanding of the integration experience of refugee people in the host society. To do so, the obstacles and resources perceived in the process of socio-professional integration, the way they make orientation choices, build, and negotiate professional projects, and the meaning of work were investigated through semi-structured interviews, resulting in five scientific articles. To contextualize the subject, the situation of asylum in the world and in Switzerland will first be presented by addressing related the social and professional integration challenges of refugee people, and then more specifically that of women, since they seem to encounter specific obstacles. Following the presentation of the five contributions, this thesis will be concluded by a general discussion offering a transversal reading of the main results through three axes of understanding – temporality, the Others and gender – and by explaining the contribution of this research. A reflection on the methodological challenges encountered when conducting research with a population from another mother language and culture will be shared. From these methodological considerations, perspectives for the research will emerge, as well as implications for counseling and guidance psychologists accompanying refugee people.
