Abstract
This thesis comprises six essays investigating the housing situation of older adults in Switzerland. The first paper identifies the determinants that trigger older adults’ intention to move. Employing an econometric model, we analyse data from the Swiss Household Panel from 2013 to 2018. The second essay examines the cantonal strategies regarding permanent and temporary care and support, distinguishing between inpatient and outpatient care. Our analysis is based on 2020 data from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office, covering 1,550 medico-social institutions and 2,546 at-home care providers. The third paper explores the equity composition of homeowners’ mortgages. The data set includes 629 homeowners in Switzerland from a specifically designed survey in 2022. We perform a k-means clustering algorithm to identify typical homeowner profiles based on their distinctive equity and pension savings contributions. We use multinomial logistic regression to study the factors determining these profiles. The following papers focus on the housing of baby boomer women living alone. The fourth essay analyses their vulnerabilities and compares them with other population groups. Statistical analyses are used on 3,610 households from the Swiss Household Panel in 2021. Based on self-collected survey data, the fifth essay explores four main dimensions – housing, finance, health, and social life – of 388 Swiss baby boomer women living alone in 2023. Using regression models, we identify crucial factors influencing their satisfaction and fears for these dimensions. Finally, the last essay focuses on factors affecting their housing-related financial fears. Using econometric and machine learning techniques, we identify factors that increase financial, price, and housing offer fears of baby boomer women living alone.
