Abstract
In this thesis, the author studies the activities of the writer, translator, Russian émigré and convert to Catholicism Elena Izvol’skaja (1896–1975) in interwar France and looks at her role through the prism of cultural mediation. Through an analysis of Izvol’skaja’s French and Russian texts, the author examines the image of Russia that Izvol’skaja offered to French readers and the image of French culture and society that she presented to her fellow emigrants. The author focuses not only on the images themselves, but on the whole complex process of their transmission and reception: on Izvol’skaja’s strategies, on the conditions in which she worked, on her networks, on the political and cultural context, as well as on the readers and their expectations and reactions.
