Abstract
(from the chapter) The personal values held by rehabilitation and health care clients influence in important ways how they comprehend and respond to health challenges or treatment interventions. For instance, affirming important personal values is associated with a willingness to participant in challenging or potentially high reward activities. Accurate assessment is the basis of effective rehabilitation interventions. Values assessment in rehabilitation and health care is in its infancy. This chapter considers the nature of values and their relevance to and assessment in rehabilitation and health care. It surveys values assessment instruments with potential for rehabilitation intervention and suggests some ways in which research and practice in values assessment in rehabilitation and health care settings can be enhanced.
